Such a good piece!! I recently read something about how current aesthetics (‘clean girl’ , Instagram face, everyone wanting to look the same) is actually a product of the right wing dominating those ideals (very Eurocentric, eugenics style thinking) and how the entire aesthetics industry is built on it.

I think there’s absolutely some truth in that.

It’s like your piece the other day on creativity - totally agree that sameness (read; blandness) is the enemy of art and beauty

Reading this piece reminds me of a selfie I took outside the Louvre in Paris. When I show it to friends they are taken aback by it's beauty. Nothing to do with filters or my presence for that matter. I'll send it and perhaps you can feature it sometime. Under the title of "NO FILTERS!" X

It may be an overreaction but this is why I’ve always been a bit weirded out by “ugly hot” or “hear me out” descriptions of celebrities, bc they sometimes feel like … almost a *cope* for finding a hot person hot. I think ultimately that sort of discourse does point to spreading the idea that attraction is weird and hard to explain and that’s good, but it just … rankles, idk.

LOU discourse is a lost cause and has been since some dudes lost their marbles over Ellie’s sexuality. IMHO it’s all just fallout from people’s weirdness around Elliot Page (I hate that I have a red string on a corkboard theory about this just trust me)

This is such an excellent take, thanks for commenting.

I hadn't even thought of the connection to "hear me out" etc for some reason, it's exactly the next stage in this discourse. And, to be fair, it's also levied against men by women, not just women.

Also yes on Ellie and Elliott Page. That's too much rage for some male gamers to contain in their little heads.

For some reason when writing this, I actually was thinking of “hear me out” as the male counterpart to ugly hot! I totally forgot about all those TikToks lol. So yes - 100% agree it’s not one gender “at fault.”

Thanks for the kind words. I’ve shared this take with friends to uh ambivalent reception 😅 good to hear I’m not just nuts!

I have a giant crush on Aimee Lou. I loudly announced how beautiful she was while watching the show with my husband. I’m so tired of the sameness you talk about, and it was so obvious when I saw Aimee Lou, like an epiphany “holy shit someone who doesn’t have filter face”. She is gorgeous and I hate SNL for doing what they did.

Even if you do make a lot of cosmetic adjustments like Milly Bobby Brown you still get’s hate because of it. It’s just impossible to win

Exactly! The way public opinion has flip flopped on Millie in recent months. From hating her to defending her after she came out and said shock horror she is hurt by the comments. It's wild how easily people forget these are actual human beings.

I absolutely love Aimee, loved her in sex education and in White Lotus. I love watching English series and movies because the people look real! But true men are not held to this ridiculous standard.

I used to have a very strong overbite when I was younger. Similar to Aimee’s in many ways. I’ve since had braces and headgear, and have had a much more conventional smile for years. Yet I still worry about the size and look of my teeth. When I watched White Lotus, I saw myself in her. When I saw that SNL skit later my heart sank, I couldn’t help it. She was a version of me on the screen, my childhood self, reduced to such a horrible caricature. I’m glad you wrote this article and are bringing light to things like this.

I love Amie Lou Wood and her teeth fit her so well! If she had veneers like every other celebrity I honestly don’t think they would look as good with her features. I think she’s gorgeous!

It’s so boring that everyone is starting to look the same. *yawn*

Perfectly written. I’m watching Lotus atm and Aimee’s beauty and character is the most striking thing about the show. Seeing her against the “perfect” 3 American friends is a stark representation of what you’re describing here. But I digress, I’m not here to slate them either. As you say… nobody wins. Well, apart from the untouchable man, of course.

Every guy I know thinks the chick from white lotus is hot as hell and her teeth don’t bother them at all. It’s cute.
